Putin holds talks with Secretary General of the Council of Europe who arrived in Russia to watch FIFA World Cup

Russian shares views of Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland that collaboration with Russia must be restored, as per the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin who made this statement during the meeting with the European politician, the official Kremlin website informs.

According to the Russian Leader, our country highly appreciates this position. He proposed to discuss these topics during their meeting.

Vladimir Putin has reminded that Jagland came to Russia to watch football and expressed hope that Secretary General would not be disappointed.

Jagland has noted that Russia once supported the European Convention on Human Rights 20 years ago. He has stressed out that a lot of positive and important purposes have been fulfilled for Europe, Russia and its people by joint efforts over the past years. 

Secretary General has added that a majority of countries-participants believe that the European Court of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights are essential documents. He has pointed out that the primary objective of the Convention and Strasbourg Court is to render help to the parties and draw them closer to each other by means of laws and decisions based on the European Convention on Human Rights.

Jagland expressed gratitude to Russia for staying with the Council of Europe for two decades and being loyal to this partnership.

The Russian delegation comprised Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the Council of Europe Ivan  Soltanovskiy and other officials.
