Christians found themselves in a very disastrous situation, according to the Head of the Russian Orthodox Church, who mentioned this subject in the course of meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, TASS reports. Their conversation took place today, on June 20, in the Russian capital. As per Patriarch Kirill, the Middle East undergoes a real catastrophe at the moment, where Christianity of the region is simply disappearing.

«Today we need to pay special attention to the situation of Christians in different regions. There is a catastrophe in the Middle East where pro-Christian population is simply disappearing,” Patriarch claimed.

The Head of the Orthodox Church cleared out that the Church is concerned about any victims suffering from injustice, terrorism and civil wars. Patriarch has reminded that he visited Iran on the verge of war. Around 1,5 million Christians lived in the north of that country, now their number reduced to barely 150 000 people.

Patriarch has also shared that the Russian Orthodox Church together with other confessions unwrapped humanitarian aid campaigns to Christians in Syria. He has underlined that it is important to take all necessary measures in order to help Christians return to Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and other countries where they used to live. Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian communities are going to protect the Christian minorities, Patriarch stressed out.

UN Secretary General mentioned that Christian communities are an inseparable part of the Middle Eastern culture and expressed hope that they are going to return after the situation is back to normal again.
