Day of Slavic Writing celebrated in Russia and abroad

24.05.2018

Day of Slavic Writing and Culture is celebrated in Russia and in many countries of the world. The main purpose of the holiday is to unite the Slavic peoples and to show respect to the heritage of the Slavic culture.

The festive events will be organized all around Russia. The main ground for celebrations will be the Red Square in Moscow. The celebrations will start with a greeting message by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The gala concert will include the Russian spiritual chants, Russian folk songs and the Soviet musical compositions. Many regions of Russia will also join the choir’s concert. Novosibirsk will host the march of the letters. Various exhibitions, master-classes, lectures and quizzes dedicated to the Slavic languages and St. Cyril and Methodius will be arranged on that day.

Saint Brothers Cyril and Methodius lived in the 9th century and founded the Slavic alphabet, which served as a basis for many languages of the world. They also translated the Gospels, the Books of the Apostles and Psalters into the Slavic language.

Traditionally the holiday is celebrated in many Slavic countries where the Russian compatriots live. In particular, the beginning of the Days of the Russian Culture is timed this holiday in Latvia. Festive events are to be held in Estonia too.

Days of the Slavic Writing are widely celebrated in Bulgaria. Sofia will hold traditional march along the central streets of the capital. A meeting by the monument to Cyril and Methodius will be held afterwards. In the evening, a great concert is planned. Various events will take place in Plovdiv, Lovech and Shumen and other Bulgarian cities.
