Russian language entered the top-5 rating of the most studied languages in European Union, as per Sputnik portal. Expectedly, the first place is taken by English that plays the main role of the inter-ethnic communication language (lingua franca) in the world, as the recent European sociologists rating states. Almost all inhabitants of EU (97.3%) know English to a certain extent.

First places in this rating are taken by French, German, and Spanish languages. Italian language runs a bit behind Russian. As the research showed six out of ten Europeans know two or more foreign languages.

Among foreign language knowledge leaders are Lichtenstein, Luxemburg, Iceland and Finland. Many citizens of these countries learn two foreign languages aside of the native one. The worst situation with foreign language studies is in Austria and Hungary.

Russian language is mostly required in Baltic countries and in Bulgaria.
