Russia will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of great Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in 2018. The program of the celebrations includes dozens of events. Sergei Prikhodko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, says the events are aimed at facilitating research and promotion of the Nobel laureate’s works. The projects will be youth-oriented, TASS reports.

About 50 percent of the planned events will be held in Moscow and St. Petersburg, with the rest taking place in other Russian regions and localities.

Nearly every cultured person in the world is familiar with Solzhenitsyn’s writings. “His books and his personality leave no-one indifferent,” Sergei Prikhodko said, adding that the celebrations would have to be memorable.

The preparations for the writer’s anniversary began last year. The major events include: building a monument to Solzhenitsyn in Moscow, opening a museum in his apartment along with a branch of the Ryazan museum, as well as compiling and publishing a new edition of The Gulag Archipelago with commentary. There are also plans of exhibitions, festivals and scientific, educational and cultural events.

This year, a museum dedicated to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn opened in Kislovodsk, the author’s hometown. As reported by the Information Service of the Russkiy Mir Foundation, it was the first museum devoted to the great writer’s life and works in the whole world. It is officially a division of the State Literature Museum. The institution was established at a Kislovodsk mansion the Nobel laureate used to frequent.

According to Natalia Solzhenitsyna, the writer’s widow, the museum will not only help people study his literary legacy, but also will contribute to the moral upbringing of youth in Kislovodsk and North Caucasus on the whole.
