Basel Museum to Return Malevich Painting to Artist's Heirs
Jan 27, 2012
An art museum in Basel has signed an agreement with the heirs of Russian avant-garde painter Kazimir Malevich, according to which one of his works, presently in Switzerland, will be transferred to his descendants, Interfax-Religion reports. The information is reported by the publication The Art Newspaper.
In 1927, Malevich visited Germany for a few weeks to participate in the Berlin Art Exhibition. However, the artist was suddenly summoned to Leningrad, and he had to leave about a hundred of his works in Berlin. Some of these subsequently became the subject of a dispute between the Swiss museum, which purchased them, and Malevich’s heirs.
