Sep 8, 2010
The sole Russian left in the men's side of the US Open, Mikhail Youzhny, has earned his quarter-final berth, Russia Today reports. The player, who reached the semis at Flushing Meadows four years ago, took care of business against Tommy Robredo.
The game was a tough three-hour slog this, but the one in which Youzhny looked in control of for the majority. The 12th seeded Russian took two of the opening sets, gave away the third, but cruised to a 7-5 6-2 4-6 6-4 in the end.
It has been a solid season to date for the 28-year-old, having reached the quarter-finals of another major, the French Open, and won the BWM Open, also in May.
He next faces Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who survived in a five-set thriller against American Sam Querrey, 7-6 6-7 7-5 4-6 6-4.
