The 5th Winter International Arts Festival, led by People's Artist of the Soviet Union Yuri Bashmet, starts in Moscow, TASS reports. The large-scale cultural forum will last for a month. Traditionally, it begins with the Don’t Leave Your Planet play based on Saint-Exupéry’s fairy tale The Little Prince. Its artistic director Konstantin Khabensky and Yuri Bashmet will appear on the stage of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater.

The festival schedule includes almost 20 events; they will take place at six venues - theaters, museums and concert halls. As usual, the festival will celebrate the birthday of Yuri Bashmet. The festive evening is scheduled for January, 24, when the maestro will turn 71 years old. Details have not been disclosed, but it is known that the All-Russian Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform in his honor.

On January 12, spectators will be invited  to the Love Stories literary and musical evening, where stories by Chekhov, Gorky, Bunin, Bulgakov, Vampilov and others will be performed. The actors' performances will be accompanied by the Moscow Soloists chamber ensemble. Musicians will perform works by Kuzma Bodrov. Yuri Bashmet will take the place at the conductor's stand.

This year, the festival program includes the premiere of Polina Agureeva’s production ''Soborians. Pictures of Russian life" based on the novel by Leskov.

The New Russia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Yuri Bashmet, will perform the music of Alexander Zatsepin at a concert on January, 16. A concert of music from Chekhov Moscow Art Theater performances is scheduled for February, 1, dedicated to the theater’s anniversary. This year the creative team turns 125 years old.
