Lavrov calls for resolving world crises by negotiations at UNGA

22.09.2017

MFARussian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gave a speech at the 72nd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, TASS reports. He touched upon a range of questions from the situation in Ukraine and Syrian crisis to North Korean conflict and UN reform.

In particular, Russian Foreign Minister has noted that NATO is seeking to revive the cold war climate, whereas western countries continue extending their military union to the east. They “provoke unrest at the ex-Soviet territories and encourage anti-Russian movements.”

Talking about the situation in Ukraine, Sergey Lavrov has remarked that today’s situation proves intention of Kiev to ignore obligations undertaken within Minsk agreements. The head of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation has underlined that Moscow hopes for a constructive dialogue about proposal of allocating the protective mission of the UN at the South East of Ukraine.

Sergey Lavrov has emphasized that Moscow also criticizes nuclear tests of North Korea. According to him, It is doubtless that UN resolutions are mandatory. He expressed assuredness that there is only political solution of this question.

Another theme of importance at the presentation of Russian Foreign Minister was the situation in Syria. He pointed out that the current situation is rather optimistic. All four escalation zones are functioning, so the next step is to arrange humanitarian aid and start mine lifting operations.

Sergey Lavrov has also called Washington for fighting Jabhat al-Nusra ruthlessly – the terrorist organization banned in Russia. At this, Syria would still require many efforts to stabilize the situation.
