Parliament's refusal to adopt the draft law allowing kids of non-citizens to automatically receive Latvian citizenship has only postponed the decision, which has now been long overdue, said Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis. According to him, sooner or later parliamentarians will have to pass this law, RIA Novosti reports.
The President of Latvia Raimonds Vejonis has commented that the people who live in Latvia without citizenship may become an important factor hampering the country development.
Let us remember, parliamentarians fear that giving the citizenship to all those born on Latvian territory would negatively affect stability of the Latvian parliament. After all, before discussing citizenship issues it's necessary to officially transfer all education system into Latvian language.
It's worth mentioning that there are 2 million people live in Latvia today. 200 thousands people don't have Latvian citizenship; major part of them are Russian-speaking.
