Department of Culture and Tourism of Novgorod regionThe anniversary of the Russian statehood is festively celebrated today, September 21st in Veliky Novgorod, Novgorod.ru website informs.

The Russian chronicles the Tale of Bygone Years states that as early as 862 the tribes inhabiting Novgorod lands invited variags – brothers of Ryurik, Syneus and Tuvor to rule over them. According to the historians, this motivated appearance of the statehood in Ancient Rus.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated the gathered people with this holiday. In his opinion, this date marks an important stage of the Russian history – in far-passed 862 our ancestors chose a path of building strong state based on unity and concord. The president is sure that the main purpose stays unchanged. It is to honor the heritage of multiple generations, protect values of love for the country and take care of the wellbeing and prosperity of the Motherland.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev joins the congratulations. He has remarked that Novgorod became a place where cultures of different tribes enriched each other. Their cooperation and concord helped Novgorod to reach prosperity and gain serious international influence.

Various events are taking place in Novgorod today including rallies and concerts. St. Sophia’s Cathedral held the church service and Cross Procession in the morning. Unveiling the monument to Russian admiral, politician and diplomat Eygeny Pulyanin is timed with the holiday.
