Flickr/Kristina SavicOrthodox Christians celebrate one of the most significant twelve Great Feasts – the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, RIA Novosti informs. All cathedrals and churches hold Divine Liturgies in remembrance of the Holy Virgin and her parents – Joachim and Anna who were blessed by God to have a baby at the advanced age. The Birth of the Godmother is the first significant annual Feast dedicated to Christ as well.

According to the church tradition, righteous Joachim and Anna from Nazareth didn’t have children for a long time and were grieving bout it. After the high priest of the Jerusalem cathedral did not accept gifts for the Feast from Joachim, he was struck with sorrow and fled to the desert where he had a vision that they would have a daughter. Joachim came home and told his wife about it. He was astounded that an Angel came up to Anna and brought news that they would conceive and give birth to a daughter. In nine months, they gave birth to the girl and named her Mary.

Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia visited Novorossiysk Eparchy at this holiday. He served the Divine Liturgy in the Domition Cathedral and talked to the congregation.
