Suvorov Memorial Museum expands in Switzerland

A gala opening of the renovated museum dedicated to the memory of Russian Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov took place in Switzerland, TASS informs. Memorial Museum is functioning in the city of Linthal, The Canton of Glarus already for three centuries. Exhibition area has been recently several times expanded. The exposition covers 1200 square meters. It is located in the Lint Park, the building of the former factory.

Glarus is one of the stages of the Suvorov’s army crossing the Alps. The events of 1799 are still vivid in people’s memory. Local authorities, Russian diplomats, members of the International Veterans Association, Alpha Antiterrorist Department assisting the museum were present at the gala ceremony.

Museum devoted to the Suvorov’s army crossing the Alps became a creation of the historian Walter Heller who founded a small exhibition at his own expense many years ago. Bullets, shells, bayonets and other artifacts were displayed at his exhibition. Heller was looking for them with a metal detector at the battlefields.

The range of exhibited items has been gradually extending. Now it comprises maps, documents, memoirs. Besides, the museum displays engravings and paintings with images of battle scenes. There are posters of WWII period, where Suvorov represents a symbol of victory over the enemy. One of the exhibited items is a uniform of Suvorov military colleges in contemporary Russia.

The entrance to the museum is free. Its founder is sure that all volunteers - both locals and tourists, should have a chance to get acquainted with an important page of their native land’s history. He has added that local population associate hope for liberation from Napoleon with Suvorov, so they respect his memory a lot.
