Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Artek Summer Camp

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Artek Summer Camp, TASS informs. The camp administration has shown a model of renovated part of the camp and also answered president’s questions on the reconstruction results. The Russian government has allocated 11 billion rubles (almost 2 million dollars) for this renovation. Putin visited the New Sunny Camp to see the construction progress.

Vladimir Putin has personally checked the kids' living conditions. He met with children who have arrived to Artek from around the world, and answered young generation’s pertinent questions.

Welcomed by Russian President, the current camp shift is dedicated to the American girl Samanta Smith. She wrote a letter to the fourth General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Yuri Andropov, who invited her to see USSR with her own eyes. Samantha has visited Artek and met many friends there in 1983. It was a very special visit during the Cold War. Speaking at the Moscow press conference afterwards, Samanta Smith declared that the Russians were "just like us”.
